Studying the grammar: 5 day colour and material workshop with great results

How to use the martellina efficiently and plan the andamenti of a mosaic had been subject of the preceding workshop Mosaic– The ABC: focus on andamenti & tools. After this basic course in mosaic making, the second workshop last week went a step further. In Mosaic – The Grammar: Focus on color and material, facts on color theory in mosaic making, effects of light and shadow as well as creating textures were taught to our participants.

After a theoretical introduction, the first practical exercises were made: The students created three different color gradients: one using only marble, one using smalti and one with a mix of materials. For this exercise makes clear how luminosity and color intensity differ in marble, smalt, ceramics and Co. and how they can be combined to create a smooth flow of colors. At the same time, this warm-up exercise was intended to let the participants create equal forms with the hammer and learn to glue the tesserae to the substrate with the cement adhesive.

Finally, on the third day, the experiences made could be applied in a 20 x 20 cm work: With excerpts from the seashell motifs of the previous workshop. After studying the gradients and transparencies in the motive, the students selected their material and created a color chart that served as an orientation while working on a mosaic that respects the colors and shapes of the original as good as possible.

While outside, in the yard of the bustling Bürgerzentrum Alte Feuerwache, a graffiti was made in a few hours, our mosaics grew more slowly. And yet, all 9 participants have completed their work. Who had finished earlier, worked on the same motive in a second and third mosaic of the same format in a free interpretation: with pebbles, tiles or other materials from our fundus.

And the results? Check them out in the gallery! We are impressed with how quickly our group has made progress – in terms of technique, use of color and material as well as in exploring new ways of working.

I had a lot of fun in those 5 days and look forward to continue the workshop series next year!

Saluti e buon lavoro :) Miriam
