A weekend full of creativity, enjoyment and encounters – that’s how I’d call the Mosaic Masterclasses in the Limonaia Urbana by Pesto Barilla. For three days in September, the traditional shop Kustermann in Munich was transformed into a world of lemons and basil, inspired by the flavours of Italy and the colours of Barilla’s new pesto creations. Together with Rahab Mosaic Art, I was able to guide 135 participants through the art of laying mosaics – an experience that brought us together with great people, unique works of art and a special interplay of art and culinary delights.
Different people, different styles
Couples, groups of friends, families with children and, of course, influencers – the workshops were a colourful mix, just like the mosaic pieces we had prepared for them. Each mosaic was a surprise: some stuck to classic patterns, others dared to create free, abstract compositions. And that’s what made it so exciting! Everyone brought their own signature to the design – from harmonious colour gradients to wild, unconventional arrangements of the smalti.
But before the creative work began, we gave a short introduction to the technique, colours and materials. How are smalti split with a mosaic hammer? Which colour combinations create stunning contrasts? How do the individual parts fit together to create a coherent overall picture? The participants were able to try things out, learn new things and, above all, enjoy the moment.
Perfect preparation for an intensive workshop experience
To ensure that everything went smoothly on site, we invested a lot of time in preparation in advance: pieces of glass and marble were cut to the right size with our mosaic hammer so that the participants could get started right away. We also put together colour mixtures that perfectly matched the Barilla world – from sunny yellow and fresh green to strong red tones reminiscent of tomatoes and Italian spices.
Art & culinary art – a brilliant combination
What made this event so special was the combination of enjoyment and design. While the scent of fresh basil and lemon zest filled the air, small works of art made of stone and glass were created at the tables. Working together, immersing themselves in colours and shapes – all this was complemented by the taste impressions of Barilla’s new pesto varieties. Food and art are both sensual experiences, and here we were able to bring them together in a wonderful way.
These three days were intense, fulfilling and full of creative energy. Thank you to everyone who was there for your openness, your enthusiasm and your unique works! A big thank you also to Pesto Barilla for the opportunity to share our passion for mosaics with so many people. I am already looking forward to new workshops, new encounters – and perhaps the next enjoyable combination of food and art.
